Course Description:  Students will engage in activities that build on their prior knowledge and skills in order to read and understand increasingly complex text. Emphasis is on comprehension, vocabulary, and critical thinking skills in an interactive environment.

 

Goals: 

1.  Develop and increase reading fluency

2.  Increase vocabulary

3.  Identify and learn literary terms

4.  Analyze a variety of literary works

5.  Be able to use higher order/critical thinking skills

6.  Respond to literature by communicating effectively through speech and writing.

 

Students’ Responsibilities:  Students will be responsible for bringing paper and pencil to class.  They are also responsible for attending class regularly and on time.  They must adhere to classroom, campus, and district rules.

 

Grading scale:  The final grade will be based on the cumulative score from tests, quizzes, worksheets, and journals.  Grades will be calculated as follows:

90% - 100% = A,    80% -89% = B,    70% - 79% = C,   60% - 69% = D   0% - 59% = F

 

Progress Reports:  These will be given to any student with an average of seventy or less midway of the grading period. 

 

Test Policy:  A minimum of three tests will be administered per six weeks.  Students will be informed several days in advance so that they can begin reviewing and studying.   

 

Homework Policy:  Students will be assigned homework on a regular basis.  Usually, homework will consist of work not completed in class, including written compositions.  It is important that students turn homework in on time.  In addition, studying for a test is considered a homework assignment.  All students will have a homework folder.

 

Late/Missing Work Policy: Students are encouraged to turn in all work by specified due dates. 10 points will be deducted for every day that the assignment is late.

 

Absences:  If a student is absent, it is the student’s responsibility to ask his/her teacher for all missed assignments.  The student will have two days upon returning to school to turn in missed assignments and to complete any tests missed during their absence.

 

Classroom Behavior: 

  1. Follow all teacher directives
  2. Be seated when the bell rings
  3. Bring all required materials to class
  4. Use appropriate language at school
  5. Keep hands, feet and objects to yourself

 

Consequences:

1st infraction- Verbal warning with documentation

2nd infraction- Teacher/student conference

3rd infraction- Parent conference via phone or in person

4th infraction- Referral to office

 

Behaviors that will warrant immediate referrals include gross insubordination, threats of violence and profanity.

 

Supplies:

1 Composition Book (to be kept in class)                                                       

1 pack of colored copy paper

1 container of antibacterial wipes

4 glue sticks

 

Students must bring a pencil, black or  blue pen to class everyday.

ABSOLUTELY NO USE OF COLORED PENS WILL BE ALLOWED OR GRADED.
